Roland TR-8 - Factory reset function is not resetting to the factory default

I do not now how this manifested itself. all of a sudden I cannot reset my TR-8 back to the default factory setting. It keeps defaulting to a really annoying pattern which I made weeks ago, even though I've followed each time the exact standard factory reset steps (here):

All of the lights and commands show on screen as you would expect 'rst' appears after hold clear button and turning it on and then the scatter lights flash and then I turn it off and on again to only receive this pattern that I remember making weeks ago e.g. 128bpm with a ton of instruments and FX already programmed (it's like the factory default has been overwritten and I don't know how to change this back!).

My Roland TR-8 is just the 'TR-8' model, not an Aira or a TR-8s.

Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated.
