Infinite loop patch question

Ok so explain to me like i'm 5 please... I recently got my first monosynth (behringer pro-1) and i tried plugging the audio out into the external in and got some cool (read: disgustingly sick) distortion out of it that i plan on using. however, this left me wondering: if the audio out signal is routing to external in... which routes to audio out... which routes to external in... how does my synth not just get fried from the infinite electrical loop there? how does it "know when to stop" and eventually still come through the output of the synth?
