Just had an epiphany.

I’ve never really been a synth guy, even though I love music. Don’t get me wrong though, I love the sounds they can make from the lush leads to the gritty basses, but I’ve never understood them and how they make those sounds. I mean, I get that you’re modulating frequencies to get an end result, but I usually get lost somewhere between the modulation and the end result.

Until tonight when I was watching family guy. Joe plays a trombone and it made sense. The mouth piece creates the first sound wave, while the arm part helps modulate the tone. If you were to change the shape of the horn at the end, I’d assume you could also affect the sound in different ways.

It’s pretty crazy that some off the cuff family guy scene helped me start to understand fm synthesis.

I’m also pretty stoned and will likely regret posting this.
