Monitors or PA?

I'm having a hard time deciding whether or not I would benefit more from a PA or some nice monitors.

What do you guys typically use for your music/synths?

I do home recording so I'm inclined to say monitors, but unfortunately I don't think I have the right room setup to use monitors effectively.

Any tips or recommendations?
