Transform keyboard synth into a modular unit

Hey, I was wondering how one would go about transforming a synth with integrated keyboard into a smaller modular unit? Say you love the machine in a synth but don't have space for the whole thing with a keyboard and would like to chop off the keys and mount it on a rack to be operated via midi with your main workstation keyboard. Has anyone tried doing this? If so, did it work? How?
