How to get into designing my own digital hardware synths?

As the title says. I'm a software engineer by day, and I'd be interested to try my hand at programming a digital hardware synthesizer. I've found a decent amount of information about DIY analog circuits, but nothing about digital hardware DSP, which is more interesting to me.

I'd like to start simple, with just an oscillator with a pitch knob and a 3.5mm output. What do I need to do that? Would a rasbperry pi work fine, or should I get something crunchier like an FPGA? Any good tutorials or open source projects I can look at?

Thanks!
