Reduced audio quality when listening to synths through mixer

I operate 3 synths connected to a mixer and then proceed to connect my headphones to the mixer. For whatever reason I’ve noticed that the sound quality of the synths through my headphones sounds so much worse through the mixer compared to if I connected my headphones directly to the synth. The same is the case if I connect to an audio interface. Why does this sound quality difference occur and can I get around it somehow?
