Pink Floyd - (Synthi AKS/VCS3/Syntrx)

So this has had me baffled for the last 24:

We all know that "On the Run" was performed by inputting sequenced notes into the Synthi AKS as seen on the "Making of The Dark Side of the Moon". It's not a particularly difficult sound to program, but getting the effects down are a nightmare.

So here is the question I have: How in the world is the sound on "Any Colour you Like" programmed on a VCS 3 a Synthi or any other EMS synthesizer? To my ears it's essentially two square waves an octave apart put through tape echo. The only thing is, it's impossible to get two square waves an octave apart on any EMS instrument.

Oscillator 1: Either a folded sine or a sawtooth

Oscillator 1: Square (pwm) or tri-sawtooth

Oscillator 3: Square (pwm) or tri-sawtooth (but only useful as an LFO with a frequency range from 0.05-500hz)

So just using the two melodic oscillators how did this happen?

I have a theory that both the minimoog and EMS were used heavily on this recording session and the final track just had the minimoog and Wright and the others misremembered. You can't deny Any Colour You Like does have a minimoog sound...

submitted by /u/Priority_Brief
[link] [comments]
