I've been wondering for years what device is used in the ending of America, the album version.
Live performances end very different.
It's also interesting that this bit is out of rhythm with the rest of the song and sort of fades in. Must have been a separate recording.
I remember my dad dropped me at school in the late 80's, and I wanted to stay in the car for a moment to hear this ending 
It still has a very unique sound today..
