Choosing a strategy for moving towards live performance

Eventually I’d like to perform live, and I’m interested in crafting a visually/spatially dynamic performance using:

• DIY controllers so I can modulate some synth parameters/sound panning with gestural and choreographic motions
• manipulating/processing live audio (vocals, contact mics / feet stamping etc)
• quadraphonic phasing rhythmic textures (Suzanne Ciani inspired)
• rich evolving drones

I know I have many learning curves ahead of me to get to that stage, but for now, I have around £600-800 to spend, and am trying to plan which one learning curve to jump into next.

Option 1: Focus on quadraphonic first Get an Expert Sleepers audio interface and 2 more studio monitors. Get stuck into vcv rack for now, don’t worry about spending more money on modules or performing live yet. Get used to sending/listening to sound on 4 speakers, see what modules I return to regularly in VCV and build a wish list for a live eurorack over time.

Option 2: Focus on live modular skills first Carefully select one or two modules that will immediately have an interesting performative relationship with my existing synths / external audio / controllers. So I’d be using a smaller fully analogue setup straight away, and not relying on VCV rack for learning.

I can tell already from playing with VCV that I’d want to experiment with: - cv controlled delay - envelope follower / function/gate generator to play with live audio - ring modulation - cv controlled quadraphonic panning

It’d be good to hear from more experienced ppl whether it’s a totally different experience to learn and play live fully analogue, and if restricting my physical kit at this stage will make me more rigorous and resourceful. Or whether it’s more fun to go wild with modules I can’t afford in VCV until I’ve delved more into the kind of sounds I want to make.

I already have: Beatstep Pro, Grandmother, 0-coast, and Isn’tses Fort Processer/Chernobyliser for glitchy noise, and am loving patching/layering these together with vocals.

(I’m guessing a fully hybrid setup eg sending multiple signals between analogue/VCV/ableton isn’t a reliable live option? Too many potentials for latency/software glitches/instability?)
